This week reminded me that as much as I like learning and teaching, sometimes the most important thing is just to take time to remember what we already know. I spent a couple of days at Mississinewa State Park camping and playing disc golf. It was a wonderful two days. As I sat by the campfire the first night, memories of having been at Mississinewa before came to me. My parents, Cathy, our boys, and my brother and his sons all went camping and played disc golf here in 2008.
When I got back I found these pictures in a scrapbook Cathy had made.

My experience this week camping along with the upcoming Memorial Day reminded me of the value of taking time to remember what is important. In my rush to learn and share new things, I sometimes forget the important memories I already have.
I’m so glad I took those two days to get away. They helped me slow down and remember special times with my family, and especially with my mom who passed away a year ago. Thinking about good times and great experiences reminded me how much God has blessed me.
If you are an American, the speed of life and the endless news we hear, most of it bad, makes it easy to forget how blessed our country has been. That’s true for those in other countries as well. My encouragement these next few days is to carve out some time to slow down and remember the important people and experiences in your life. I think you will find memories of God’s blessings too.
