Jesus leaves His disciples, but the gospel story isn’t over! Jesus tells them with the help of the Holy Spirit they will be His witnesses to their families, neighbors, communities, nation, and even to the ends of the world. Now it is His followers’ job to share the good news of Jesus and share His love, forgiveness, grace, and hope with the world.
In my message Sunday I said we are all witnesses for something. A witness is simply one who sees or experiences an event and then shares what they’ve seen or experienced with others.
As I was writing the message, it hit me that both our sons work for a company that sells and services software that allows consumers to rate and review the items and services we all purchase.
I’m guessing every one of you have looked at ratings or reviews. Many people I know won’t go to a restaurant or movie or buy something, especially online, without looking at the ratings and reviews first. Our boys tell me I could probably make some money if I signed up to try products and review them!
Why are companies spending millions of dollars for consumers to rate their products? What could make these ratings so important??
People would never use these words, but what they are really asking before they try something is: “Can I get a witness?” People want to know someone else has had a positive experience with a product or service before they will spend their own money on it.
Followers of Jesus have something to offer people that is better than any of the products and services the companies paying for these ratings and reviews can provide. But people aren’t likely to want to explore a relationship with Jesus without a witness from someone who has a positive relationship with Him.
This year, after a meaningful Holy Week and wonderful Easter, we are asking our church how we might be witnesses to the good news of Jesus and His love, hope, forgiveness, and strength. Can our church find ways to share our positive faith experiences with others? Even better, can we share with them the love, hope, forgiveness and strength Jesus has given us?
