Gold medal dreams
I have fond memories of high jumping over cane fishing poles onto an old mattress. Shot putting and discus throwing concrete barbell weights. (Sorry, Dad, for what that did to the yard.) Timing hundreds of sprints with a stop watch my parents gave me. And biking lap after lap around the neighborhood.
I have always loved the Olympics. Like many kids, I dreamed of someday participating in the Olympics. I stood on the podium and received many a gold medal in those dreams!
My Olympic dreams, unfortunately, never became reality.
As the 2018 Winter Olympics begin, a thought came to me. What am I dreaming of and training for now? I still try to exercise, but dreams of athletic success have dimmed. I am glad there are now age-group competitions—I haven’t completely given up!
Paul has some training advice for those who follow Jesus. The Message paraphrase of 1 Timothy 4:8 puts it this way:
Exercise daily in God—no spiritual flabbiness, please! Workouts in the gymnasium are useful, but a disciplined life in God is far more so, making you fit both today and forever.
Let's not give up on our dreams! But let’s set our sights on prizes that will never tarnish.
